OOooh, now the UAW is all sniffy at some southern senators that don't want to sign the Treasury over to the LAAC (legacy American auto companies) to protect his members' standard of living. Seems to me that he wants to hardball the Republicans, but goes whining like a titty-baby when he gets a little chin-music:
"Union officials also accused the senators of retaliating for the UAW's overwhelming support of Democratic candidates in federal races. The union gave $1.9 million to Democrats but only $11,500 to Republicans in the 2008 election cycle.
Many Democrats support the Employee Free Choice Act, which would take away employers' rights to demand a secret ballot on whether workers will join a union. Instead, workers could form unions by getting a majority of employees to sign a card in support of it."
If the UAW didn't have so much "frosting" (double time on Sundays, for example) on their basic wages, perhaps a case might be made for bridge loans (not bailouts). I worked for GM* in front line management. Our standing joke was "If GM were discrete divisions, they wouldn't last 6 months. But as a whole, it's too big to fail." Now, if callow youths like myself could see this truism in 1968, where were the movers/shakers and pundits who are supposed to see the future? Not in a production capacity, you betcha. But nobody cares two figs for what the dirty-nails folk think...
If you don't see the big picture, check out this report from a capitalist. This is also scarier than a bald man in a bathing suit. "Gird your loins" for more of the same.
Here's a dissenting view.
